🧶 Why I Teach Crochet (And Why It Matters)
People often ask me why I teach crochet.
It’s not because I think everyone needs another hobby!
It’s about confidence, calm, and connection.
People often ask me why I teach crochet.
It’s not because I think everyone needs another hobby — although let’s be honest, who doesn’t love a good reason to sit down with a cup of tea and some gorgeous yarn? I teach crochet because I’ve seen first-hand how it changes lives.
And no, that’s not an exaggeration.
I’ve watched women come into class convinced they can’t do it — “I’ve got no coordination,” “I’m too old to learn,” “I tried once and failed.”
And I’ve seen those same women leave beaming, clutching a wonky little square or a just-finished flower with the biggest sense of achievement.
Because here’s the thing: crochet isn’t just about stitches. It’s about confidence, calm, and connection.
In our fast-paced world, finding ways to unwind and maintain our mental health is more important than ever. One surprisingly effective method is crochet. This age-old craft not only produces beautiful, handmade items but also offers numerous mental health benefits. In this post, we’ll delve into the science behind crochet’s positive effects, share personal stories, and provide practical tips to help you get started on your crochet journey.

🌿 Crochet brings calm in a noisy world
We live in a world that’s always ‘on’ — phones pinging, to-do lists growing, and minds whirring. Crochet offers a rare pause. The simple rhythm of yarn over, pull through, repeat — it slows your breath, settles your thoughts, and helps bring you back into the moment.
I’ve had students say things like:
“I came in feeling anxious and scattered, but by the end of class, I felt like I could breathe again.”
That’s powerful. And it’s why I always build my classes around kindness, patience, and progress at your pace.
💚 It builds confidence, one stitch at a time
When someone who’s never picked up a hook before suddenly says “I made this!” — it’s magic. Pure magic.
It’s not just about the granny square or the basket or the face pad. It’s about the quiet little voice inside that whispers, “I can do things I didn’t think I could.”
That feeling matters. Especially for women in midlife who’ve spent years putting others first — it’s empowering to reclaim time, creativity, and a sense of achievement that’s all your own.

It connects us — through yarn and laughter
Crochet classes aren’t just about learning stitches. They’re about belonging.
I’ve seen the friendships grow, the encouragement shared, the laughs when we all get our counts wrong (because yes, even I do that sometimes!). There’s something really special about sitting in a room or logging into a call with other people who get it — who cheer you on, stitch by stitch.
And for those feeling isolated or just in need of a safe, friendly space? Crochet becomes more than a craft — it becomes a lifeline.
A Moment That Stuck With Me
One of the most memorable moments I’ve had while teaching was with a lady who joined my beginners course with a very special goal in mind — she wanted to crochet a baby blanket for her soon-to-be-born grandchild. On the first week, she proudly shared her aim with the group, but I later found out she wasn’t sure she’d actually manage it.
At our final session, she came in smiling, holding the start of her baby blanket in her hands. She had not only picked her yarn and followed the pattern, but she had actually begun to bring it to life. She told me quietly that she hadn’t thought she’d be able to do it — that she believed it was over-ambitious. Seeing her joy, her confidence, and that blanket beginning to grow from her hook was a moment I’ll never forget. That’s the kind of transformation crochet can offer. It’s about far more than yarn — it’s belief in yourself, stitch by stitch.

✨ Crochet is a skill that grows with you
Whether you’re making your first chain or designing your own patterns, crochet grows with you. There’s always something new to learn, some way to stretch your creativity — and I love being part of that journey with my students.
From simple stitches to detailed projects, I aim to give you the foundations and confidence to take crochet as far as you want — and most importantly, to enjoy every step.
💚 Why Crochet Helps So Much
There’s something deeply calming and grounding about the rhythm of crochet. It allows you to slow down, breathe, and be present. Research has shown that the repetitive motion of crochet can release serotonin, the “feel-good” hormone, which helps combat stress and anxiety. In fact, studies have found that over 80% of people who crochet report feeling happier and more relaxed after a session.
For women navigating peri-menopause or menopause, this becomes even more powerful. Our bodies and minds are going through so much — and having a creative, soothing outlet like crochet can be a lifeline. It’s something to focus on, to look forward to, and to take pride in.
So… why do I teach crochet?
Because I believe in the joy of handmade.
Because I believe women deserve time for themselves.
Because I believe in the magic of creating something from just yarn and a hook.
But mostly?
Because I’ve seen the moment a woman looks at what she’s made — and smiles. And that, for me, is everything.
