Take the stress out of Flying with your Hook

Can I really take my Hook on a flight?

There’s something magical about soaring through the skies, suspended amidst the clouds with a sense of adventure in your heart and a crochet project in your hands. For crochet enthusiasts, the prospect of taking their craft on a plane is an exciting opportunity to combine two passions: travelling and creating beautiful masterpieces with yarn and hook. In this blog post, we’ll explore the ins and outs of crocheting on a plane, from navigating airport security to handy tips for inflight crochet adventures.

Before You Take Off: Crocheting Essentials for Your Flight

Before embarking on your crochet journey in the skies, let’s ensure you’re well-prepared for a smooth takeoff. Here’s what you need to know and pack for your crochet-friendly flight:

1. Check Airport Security Guidelines:

While crochet hooks are generally allowed on planes, it’s essential to double-check the security regulations of your departing and arriving airports. In most cases, standard crochet hooks made of metal, bamboo, or plastic are permitted, but sharp or oversized hooks might be subject to additional scrutiny.

2. Choose Your Project Wisely:

Opt for a crochet project that’s compact, easy to manage, and doesn’t require too many supplies. Small projects like granny squares, amigurumi, or a delicate scarf are ideal for crocheting on the go.

3. Organize Your Supplies:

Use a small travel pouch or organizer to keep your crochet essentials in one place. Include your yarn, crochet hooks, stitch markers, and a pair of small scissors or yarn cutter. Having everything in a single bag will make it easier to access and keep your crochet area tidy during the flight.

4. Yarn Selection Matters:

Choose a yarn that doesn’t shed or split easily, as the last thing you want is to leave a trail of tiny fibres in your seat or on fellow passengers. Smooth and non-fuzzy yarns are your best bet for an enjoyable crochet experience onboard.

5. Yarn and Hook Safety:

Remember, airport security might ask to inspect your crochet supplies, so be ready to explain the purpose of your hooks and needles. Keeping them in a transparent bag or a clear pouch can facilitate the security check process.

Crafting at the Airport:

1. Early Arrival, Crafty Time:

Arrive at the airport with ample time before your flight’s departure. Use this extra time to crochet comfortably in the waiting area or at the gate. It’s a great way to relax and get into the crafting mood before your journey begins.

2. Be Mindful of Space:

Be considerate of your fellow travellers and the limited space around you. Keep your crochet project contained and avoid extending your yarn into the walkway or encroaching on neighbouring seats.

3. Airport Lounges – A Crafter’s Oasis:

If you have access to an airport lounge, take advantage of the comfortable seating and quiet environment to immerse yourself in your crochet project. Lounges offer a peaceful haven for crafters seeking some quality time with their hooks and yarn.

4. Save Some for the Flight:

While it’s tempting to start crocheting the moment you sit down, consider saving some of your project for the flight itself. Crocheting during the journey adds a touch of novelty and helps pass the time in a productive and enjoyable way.

Keely inspecting a blanket she is making
Keely Checking a blanket

Inflight Crochet Adventures:

1. Be Mindful of Space and Movement:

In the confined space of an aircraft, crochet with consideration for your fellow passengers. Avoid sudden movements with your hook and yarn to prevent accidentally touching or bumping your seatmate.

2. Optimal Lighting Matters:

Bring a small portable LED light or use the overhead light to ensure you have enough visibility for your crochet work. Proper lighting prevents straining your eyes during those long flights.

3. Time Your Stitches:

Use the downtime during the flight to make significant progress on your crochet project. Time flies when you’re having fun with your hooks and yarn!

4. Stretch and Move:

Crocheting for extended periods may lead to stiff muscles, so take short breaks to stretch and move around. It’s essential to keep your body comfortable and prevent any crochet-induced discomfort.

Remember the Journey, Not Just the Destination:

A Therapeutic Tool for Nervous Flyers:

For those who experience flight anxiety, crocheting can be an invaluable therapeutic tool. The act of crocheting diverts the mind from turbulence and distractions, offering a comforting focus that eases nervousness. Many crafters have found solace in their hooks and yarn during long flights, transforming what might have been an anxious journey into an opportunity for creative expression and tranquillity.

Uninterrupted Dedication to Your Craft:

In the fast-paced world, we live in, moments of uninterrupted dedication to our hobbies are precious. While on a plane, you’re free from everyday distractions, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in your crochet project. The concentrated time in the air offers an opportunity to make significant progress on your work and, in turn, a sense of accomplishment by the time you land.

Spreading the Love of Crochet:

Crocheting on a plane isn’t just a personal indulgence; it’s an opportunity to share the love of the craft with those around you. Through your creativity and dedication, you inspire curiosity and admiration for the art of crochet. Who knows, your inflight crochet session might spark an interest in someone nearby, leading them to pick up a crochet hook and embark on their own creative journey.

Crocheting on a plane is more than just a creative outlet; it’s an experience that connects you to fellow crafters and fellow passengers. Embrace the joy of crafting in the clouds, and don’t forget to share your journey with the crochet community and beyond. As you unravel the yarn and create beautiful stitches at 30,000 feet, cherish the moments, and let your craft take you on a memorable journey through the skies!

Bon voyage and happy crocheting!

Celebrating International Yarn Bombing Day!

Imagine a world where the mundane becomes extraordinary, where the ordinary transforms into art. Well, mark your calendars because, on June 10th, we celebrate International Yarn Bombing Day! This exciting global event showcases the creativity and imagination of people all over the world as they bring colour, warmth, and wonder to public spaces through the whimsical act of yarn bombing.

In this blog, we will delve into the fascinating world of yarn bombing, exploring its origins, impact, and how you can get involved in this unique form of artistic expression. Get ready to be inspired and embrace the joy of yarn bombing!

What is Yarn Bombing?

Yarn bombing, also known as yarn graffiti, guerrilla knitting, wool bombing, yarn storming, urban knitting or knitted graffiti. It is a form of street art that involves covering objects, structures, or public spaces with colourful knitted or crocheted yarn. From trees and lampposts to benches and statues, anything can be yarn bombed!

In the UK the iconic British postbox is a very popular option with thousands of people enjoying spreading the word via Facebook groups. This act of artistic rebellion has gained popularity over the years, transforming urban landscapes into vibrant, cosy, and eye-catching displays of creativity.

Origins of Yarn Bombing:

The roots of yarn bombing can be traced back to the early 2000s when knitters and crocheters sought to reclaim their craft from the realm of domesticity and infuse it with a sense of adventure and public expression. Inspired by traditional graffiti and street art, they began wrapping objects in yarn, creating a new form of artistic rebellion. Magda Sayeg, often referred to as the “mother of yarn bombing,” gained recognition for her early yarn bombing installations in Texas. Since then, yarn bombing has spread globally, captivating artists and communities alike.

The Impact of Yarn Bombing:

Yarn bombing offers a host of benefits that extend beyond its visual appeal. Here are a few ways yarn bombing has made a positive impact:

  1. Creating Community Connections: Yarn bombing encourages community engagement and collaboration. Artists, crafters, and volunteers come together to plan and execute installations, fostering a sense of togetherness and shared purpose.
  2. Spreading Joy and Surprise: Yarn bombing injects an element of surprise and delight into everyday life. It transforms ordinary spaces into extraordinary ones, evoking smiles, curiosity, and conversations among passersby.
  3. Revitalizing Public Spaces: Neglected or forgotten urban areas can be brought to life through yarn bombing. By adding colourful yarn creations, these spaces become visually engaging, inviting people to interact and enjoy their surroundings.
  4. Showcasing Creativity: Yarn bombing provides a platform for artists to showcase their talent and creativity in unconventional ways. It challenges traditional notions of art and encourages imaginative thinking.

How Can You Get Involved?

Now that you’re inspired to join the yarn bombing movement, here are a few ways you can get involved:

  1. Start Small: Begin by practising your knitting or crochet skills on smaller projects like creating colourful cosies for everyday objects such as coffee mugs, door handles, or bicycle handles. This will help you refine your technique before taking on larger installations.
  2. Collaborate with Local Artists: Reach out to local artists or existing yarn bombing groups in your area. By joining forces, you can pool resources, share ideas, and collaborate
  3. Plan an Installation: Choose a public space in your community that could benefit from a touch of yarn bombing. It could be a park, a bus stop, or a street corner. Get permission from the relevant authorities or seek out spaces where yarn bombing is encouraged. Plan the installation carefully, considering the colours, patterns, and objects you want to yarn bomb.
  4. Organise a Yarn Bombing Event: Gather a group of like-minded individuals and organize a yarn bombing event. Spread the word through social media, local community groups, or craft stores. Set a date, gather supplies, and work together to create yarn-bombing pieces. On the designated day, head out as a team and install your creations, spreading joy and colour throughout your community.
  5. Document and Share: Capture the beauty of your yarn bombing installations through photographs or videos. Share them on social media platforms using the hashtag #YarnBombingDay and tag relevant yarn-bombing communities. By sharing your work, you inspire others to join the movement and celebrate the artistry of yarn bombing.
  6. Support Yarn Bombing Artists: Show your appreciation for the artists who dedicate their time and talent to yarn bombing. Attend local exhibitions, purchase yarn-bombing merchandise, or donate to yarn-bombing organisations that promote and support this unique art form.

International Yarn Bombing Day celebrates the creative spirit and the transformative power of art. It provides an opportunity to reimagine our surroundings and infuse them with colour, warmth, and joy. Whether you’re a seasoned knitter or a curious beginner, yarn bombing offers a chance to express your creativity and make a positive impact in your community. So, grab your knitting needles, crochet hooks, and let your imagination run wild on June 10th. Together, let’s unleash the beauty of yarn bombing and inspire a world filled with art, warmth, and wonder!

Why You Should Unleash Your Creativity and Relax with Crochet – Perfect for Stress Relief! a Little Every Day

Crochet has been a beloved hobby for generations. But, did you know that it can also help you relax and reduce stress? In this post, we’ll explore the benefits of crochet, how it can help relieve stress, and tips to get started.

Crochet is a handicraft that involves creating fabric by interlocking loops of yarn or thread with a crochet hook. This simple yet satisfying craft has been scientifically proven to be therapeutic for mental health. It allows you to channel your creativity into something tangible, which can be incredibly rewarding. So, if you’re feeling stressed, anxious, or just need a break from the chaos of everyday life, crochet might just be the perfect activity for you.

Crochet has a long and rich history, with evidence of the craft dating back to the 19th century. Many of us have fond memories of watching our grandmothers or great-grandmothers crochet, creating beautiful and intricate pieces. In the past, crochet was a popular pastime for women of all ages, and it was often used to create practical items for the home.

One of the most popular items that grandmothers would crochet were blankets, also known as afghans. These blankets were typically made up of small, colorful squares or stripes, which were then joined together to create a larger blanket. The process of creating an afghan was often a labour of love, with many grandmothers spending hours upon hours carefully crafting each square.

In addition to blankets, there were other popular and practical crochet other items, such as dishcloths, potholders, and coasters. These items were not only functional, but they also added a touch of handmade charm to the home.

But it wasn’t just practical items that grandmothers would crochet. They would also create beautiful pieces of clothing and accessories, such as hats, scarves, and shawls. These items were often made with intricate patterns and designs, showcasing the skill and creativity of the crafter.

Crochet was also a way for grandmothers to pass down their skills and knowledge to younger generations. Many of us can remember sitting next to our grandmothers, watching as they worked their magic with a crochet hook and a ball of yarn. For some, this tradition has continued, with grandchildren and great-grandchildren taking up the craft and carrying on the legacy.

Overall, crochet has played a significant role in the lives of many grandmothers, providing them with a creative outlet and a way to make practical and beautiful items for their homes and loved ones.

The Science behind Crochet

Studies have shown that engaging in creative activities such as crochet can help reduce stress and anxiety. According to a study published in the Journal of Neuropsychiatry, engaging in repetitive activities such as crocheting can help calm the mind and reduce stress levels. When you crochet, your focus is on the task at hand, which can help to reduce the impact of stressors in your life.

Additionally, the rhythmic and repetitive motions of crocheting can help to stimulate the production of dopamine, a neurotransmitter associated with feelings of pleasure and reward. Dopamine can help to reduce stress and promote relaxation.

Crochet’s status as being old fashioned is no longer true

Certainly! Crochet has come a long way since its humble beginnings as a practical craft used for creating blankets, clothing, and home decor. In recent years, crochet has seen a resurgence in popularity as it has been embraced by a new generation of crafters and fashion designers.

One of the driving forces behind the renewed interest in crochet has been the rise of the slow fashion movement. As consumers have become more conscious of the environmental impact of fast fashion, many have turned to crafts like crochet as a way to create their own clothing and accessories in a more sustainable and ethical way.

As a result, crochet has become increasingly popular among designers and fashion brands. Many high-end fashion houses, such as Chanel, Valentino, and Missoni, have incorporated crochet into their collections, creating intricate and stunning pieces that showcase the beauty and versatility of the craft.

Celebrities have also played a role in popularizing crochet. Singer and actress Mandy Moore has been vocal about her love of crochet, even sharing photos of her own projects on social media. Similarly, actress and model Emily Ratajkowski has been spotted wearing crochet clothing and accessories on several occasions.

In addition to celebrities, social media influencers and bloggers have also helped to bring crochet back into the mainstream. But perhaps the most significant development in the world of crochet has been the way in which it has evolved as a form of self-expression. Many crafters now use crochet to create unique and personalized items that reflect their own style and personality. From bold and colourful blankets to delicate and intricate shawls, crochet has become a way for people to showcase their creativity and individuality.

Overall, the renewed interest in crochet has been a testament to the enduring appeal of this timeless craft. As more and more people discover the joy of working with yarn and a hook, it’s clear that crochet will continue to evolve and inspire for many years to come.

History and Bookmarks – The Fascinating History of Bookmarks: From Thin Leather Strips to Elaborate Silk Weaves

Welcome to my fun blog about history and bookmarks! In this post, we’ll explore the quirky and interesting details about this simple yet essential item that has been helping readers keep track of their place in a book for centuries.

First, let’s start with the basics: what is a bookmark?

A bookmark is a thin marker, usually made of paper or card, that is used to keep track of the reader’s place in a book. While the concept of a bookmark may seem straightforward, its history is anything but.

Bookmarks and book thongs are essential tools for any book lover. Not only do they help us keep our place in our favourite novels, but they can also express our personality and creativity. From the ancient Greeks to modern-day readers, bookmarks and book thongs have evolved and adapted to suit the needs and preferences of readers.

Bookmarks have been around for centuries, with evidence of their use dating back to ancient Egypt. In fact, the first bookmarks were made from papyrus scraps and were used to mark the location of a specific passage in a scroll. I know many people who would do something similar now grabbing a receipt or post-it note!

Some of the earliest bookmarks were actually decorative clasps or figurines that were attached to the book itself, rather than placed between its pages.

The bookmark as we know it today began to take shape during the Middle Ages when scribes began to create books that were bound together and needed a way to mark a reader’s place.

The Evolution of Bookmarks: From Practical Tools to Beautiful Works of Art

As the use of books spread throughout Europe, bookmarks began to take on a more practical form. Monks and scribes used simple strips of parchment or leather to mark their place in manuscripts, while wealthy book collectors commissioned custom-made bookmarks adorned with precious stones or gold leaf.

During the Renaissance, bookmarks became more ornate and decorative. They were more widely used among the general population as literacy rates increased and printed books became more affordable.

In the 16th and 17th centuries, bookmarks were often made from silk ribbons and embroidered with elaborate designs or inscriptions. Bookmarks were often made from silk or embroidered fabric, and they were adorned with tassels and other decorative elements.

One interesting detail about the history of bookmarks is that they were not always called “bookmarks”. The term “bookmark” didn’t come into common use until the 19th century. Before that, bookmarks were known by a variety of names, including “page markers,” “ribbon markers,” and “placeholders.”

Victorian Needlework: How Young Girls Learned to Make Embroidered Bookmarks

During the Victorian era, young girls were often taught needlework and embroidery as part of their education. This was seen as an important skill for young ladies to have, as it was believed that they would need to be able to sew and embroider to create and mend clothing and household items throughout their lives.

A bookmark was a popular item that young girls would often make as part of their needlework training. These bookmarks would be used to mark pages in their bibles or other religious texts and other books they were reading for leisure or education.

Many of these Victorian-era bookmarks were intricately embroidered, featuring delicate stitching and intricate designs. They often featured religious symbols or inspirational messages and were designed to be both functional and aesthetically pleasing.

The making of bookmarks also served as a way for young girls to express their creativity and individuality. Each bookmark was unique, reflecting the personal style and preferences of the maker. This was seen as an important part of a young girl’s education, as it encouraged her to develop her sense of style and creativity. In addition, it provided a sense of accomplishment and pride when the finished product was complete.

Stevengraph Bookmarks: A Unique Combination of Art and Functionality

Thomas Stevens was a weaver from Coventry, England. Stevens was known for his expertise in creating woven silk images, and he applied this technique to bookmarks. They are named Stevengraphs after their creator and gained popularity during the late 19th century.

Stevengraph bookmarks are made using a Jacquard loom, which is a mechanical loom that was first invented in the early 1800s. The loom is capable of creating intricate woven designs using multiple colours of thread. Stevens used this technology to create bookmarks featuring a wide range of images, including famous figures, landmarks, and other scenes.

One of the unique aspects of Stevengraph bookmarks is their texture. The silk used in the weaving process gives the bookmarks a distinctive feel, and the images are often quite detailed. In addition, many Stevengraph bookmarks were created to commemorate special events, such as royal weddings or other historical occasions.

Stevengraph bookmarks quickly became popular in England and the United States, and they were collected by book lovers and collectors alike. Today, Stevengraph bookmarks are highly sought after by collectors, and they are considered to be a valuable and historically significant type of bookmark.

In addition to their aesthetic and historical value, Stevengraph bookmarks also provide a unique window into the social and cultural trends of the late 19th century. They offer a glimpse into the types of images and themes that were popular during this period, and they provide a fascinating look at how bookmarks have evolved and adapted over time.

Another fact about History and bookmarks is that they have been used for purposes beyond just marking one’s place in a book. During World War II, for example, soldiers used bookmarks as a means of passing secret messages to one another. The messages would be written on the bookmark and then left in a designated location for the intended recipient to find.

Fast forward to the present day, and bookmarks are available in a variety of materials and designs. From paper and card to metal and plastic, bookmarks can be found to suit any taste or preference. Some even feature designs that are specific to certain book genres, such as mystery or romance novels.

One interesting trend in modern bookmarks is the rise of digital bookmarks. With the increasing popularity of e-readers and digital books, many readers have turned to digital bookmarks as a way to keep track of their place in a book. Digital bookmarks can be saved and synced across multiple devices, making it easy to pick up where you left off no matter where you are.

Book Thongs: The Slim and Stylish Alternative to Traditional Bookmarks

While traditional paper bookmarks remain a popular choice, book thongs have gained popularity in recent years. Book thongs are typically made from a thin strip of material, such as linen or leather, that is long enough to dangle out of the book. They are designed to make it easy to locate your place in a book without having to flip through the pages to find the bookmark.

The history of book thongs can be traced back to ancient cultures, where they were often made from strips of thin leather. The leather strips were typically adorned with beads or feathers, and they were used to mark the pages of important texts.

In more recent times, book thongs have been adapted to modern materials and aesthetics. Today, book thongs are often made from thin strips of linen thread, which can be braided or knotted to create interesting designs. Some book thongs feature decorative beads or charms, while others are made from colourful fabrics or ribbons.

Book thongs offer a fun and creative way to personalize your reading experience. They can be braided, knotted, or decorated with beads or charms to create unique and interesting designs. Some book thongs even feature small trinkets or charms that are specific to a particular book or series.

One of the advantages of book thongs is their versatility. They can be used in a variety of book sizes and shapes, and they can be easily adjusted to fit the reader’s preferences. Additionally, they can be used to mark multiple places in a book, making them ideal for textbooks or reference materials.

Another advantage of book thongs is their durability. Unlike paper or card bookmarks, which can easily become damaged or lost, book thongs are made from sturdy materials that can withstand daily use. They can be easily washed and reused, making them a more sustainable and eco-friendly option.

Of course, there are some downsides to using book thongs. They can be more difficult to use than traditional paper bookmarks, especially for those who are new to using them. Additionally, they can be more expensive than paper bookmarks, especially if you opt for more elaborate designs or materials.

Despite these potential drawbacks, book thongs remain a popular choice for many readers. Whether you prefer traditional paper bookmarks or more unconventional options like book thongs, the important thing is to find a bookmark that works for you and helps you enjoy your reading experience to the fullest.

Despite the many changes that bookmarks have undergone over the centuries, one thing remains constant: their essential role in the reading experience. Whether you’re a student poring over a textbook or a casual reader enjoying a novel, a good bookmark can help you stay engaged and focused on the task at hand.

So next time you reach for a bookmark to mark your place in a book, take a moment to appreciate the rich history and quirky details behind this humble yet essential item. Who knows, you might just find a new appreciation for the simple act of reading and the many tools that make it possible.

In conclusion, bookmarks and book thongs are both essential tools for any book lover. They not only help us keep our place in our favorite novels, but they also offer a fun and creative way to express our personality and creativity.

From the earliest papyrus scraps to the modern-day book thong, bookmarks have evolved and adapted to suit the needs and preferences of readers throughout history. So next time you settle in with a good book, consider using a bookmark or book thong to help you keep your place and make your mark on the literary world.

Book Review The Whispering Muse by Laura Purcell

The Whispering Muse by Laura Purcell

Here’s the blurb…………

At The Mercury Theatre in London’s West End, rumours are circulating of a curse. It is said that the lead actress Lilith has made a pact with Melpomene, the tragic muse of Greek mythology, to become the greatest actress to ever grace the stage. Suspicious of Lilith, the jealous wife of the theatre owner sends dresser Jenny to spy on her, and, desperate for the money to help her family, Jenny agrees.

What Jenny finds is a woman as astonishing in her performance as she is provocative in her nature. On stage, it’s as though Lilith is possessed by the characters she plays, yet off stage she is as tragic as the muse who inspires her, and Jenny, sorry for her, befriends the troubled actress. But when strange events begin to take place around the theatre, Jenny wonders whether the rumours are true and fears that when the muse comes calling for payment, the cost will be too high.

The Whispering Muse Cover

Set in Victorian London The Whispering muse is a gothic tale. It is full of suspense and chills with a splattering of blood to help set your nerves on edge!

I try not to provide any spoilers to my book reviews, so will comment that for me I was eagerly waiting to see what would happen next and watch how the scenes developed. There was a certainty to each act that still managed to surprise in it’s gruesomeness yet there was still love and kindness threaded through, sometimes using the thinnest thread and often huge swags.

Jenny has a huge sense of responsibility that has been forced upon her by circumstances but she never loses her humanity even with the hardships she faces. As the story unfolds she has to reconsider if her employer is actually the innocent she portrays?

The story does not disappoint and truly shows the bases of human behaviours along with the humanity most people have,

Deeply enticing, a tale for theatre lovers who love a bit of darkness with their plays!

Available to purchase from 2 February 2023

Monotone book mark

This dark and atmospheric tale deserves a bookmark to suit and this monotone thong with a silver engraved bead is perfect. There are dark shimmery greys and a black bead that is a bright crystal on the reverse. A perfect match for the feel of this book. Interestingly this one has a little silver wheelbarrow on which would help with moving all the dead around!
